Introduction

Iodine stained carrageenan

The front cover picture this quarter is a micrograph of a stained semi refined carrageenan particle still showing the cellular structure of the original seaweed. This is a useful technique for identifying seaweed blends and identifying quickly if a sample showing a low AIM is of South American origin or is a refined sample that has been diluted with a small amount of semi refined carrageenan.

CyberColloids have just moved into a new laboratory in Currabinny, Carrigaline. It was quite a challenge to move all our equipment, samples, desks and everything else and not disrupt the business but now everyone is settled in and we have significantly more space than in the previous laboratory and a fantastic view from the laboratory window over the tiny harbour of Crosshaven and its claim to fame for being the home of the oldest yacht club in the world.
