- The xanthan gum market, approx $450M, is driven by three main categories
- Food, approx $194 m where sauces and dressings is the key application
- Oil, approx $152 m, which is being targeted aggressively by the Chinese producers
- Pharma/Personal Care, approx, $58 m, with toothpaste being the major application
- There are two new growth opportunities, since last reporting, namely
- Low juice containing beverages in Asia and Latin America
- Toothpastes on a global basis
Growth between 2004 and 2009 has been estimated to have been a very healthy average of 6.5%/yr, from 70Kmt growing to 96Kmt, which however was lower than 2008 by 9.3% mainly due to significantly lower activity in the oilfield drilling industry. This type of growth is forecast to continue with volumes to almost 114Kmt which still would only represent 84% of nominal capacities.
