EU - stricter on GM labelling
The European Union has plans to alter the rules on the labelling of foods containing genetically modified ingredients. If the new laws are passed then a manufacturer will have to be able to show that his product contains 'no detectable' genetically modified ingredients as opposed to the previous rule where it had to contain less than 1% modified ingredients. A statement from the EU said that the new legislation must give the consumer a real and informed choice that could be defended against fraud and misuse.
There is a dichotomy in European thinking on the one hand there is a constant consumer demand for cheaper foods but this is balanced by an absolute requirement for informed choice.
