Animal feed chaos

18thOctober 2004

Companies have until the 7th november to ensure they have notified the EU commission of products to be included in the new animal feed regulations. Companies appear to have been caught on the hop!

The following note was supplied by AJH Consulting. If you have yet to send in your notification then we recommend using AJH Consulting to ensure you notifications are complete and on time.

Notification Requirements for Animal Feed

Regulation 1831/2003 on Additives for use in animal nutrition sets out procedures for achieving acceptance of new additives and continued use of additives allowed under existing legislation.

All existing products have to be notified to the Commission by November 7th this year and at the same time a minimum set of information on them has to be provided to EFSA. This has to been done in a prescribed manner and failure to do so will result in the additive no longer being allowed in animal feed.

Following notification EFSA will inform the Commission of the additives for which adequate data has been received and a register of these will be drawn up.

Industry have a further period of time to compile a more detailed dossier for their additive containing for example toxicology and efficacy data. Again failure to provide the required data by the deadlines set will result in the additive being no longer allowed.

Whilst there is a list of additives for which notifications have already been submitted on the EU web site suppliers may still wish to submit their own notification since there is no way of knowing whether the method of manufacture given in the received notification will cover their particular process.
